Thailand's Covid-19 alert level was elevated to the second highest tier on Monday, following an increase in the number of new infections connected to the spread of the Omicron strain. According to sources, the Ministry of Public Health upped the Covid-19 alert level from 3 to 4, a category that includes laws prohibiting dining or drinking in restaurants and avoiding public gatherings. Due to the rapid spread of the Omicron form, which already accounts for more than 90% of active cases, the ministry predicted that the number of new infections would continue to rise in the coming one or two weeks. Thailand's Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration reported 18,883 new cases and 32 new fatalities in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections and fatalities to more over 2.73 million and 22,656, respectively (CCSA). The ministry recommended everyone, especially those over 60 and those with underlying conditions, to get booster doses as soon as possible. According to the CCSA, 71.1 percent of the country's almost 70 million people had been fully vaccinated as of Sunday, while 27.5 percent had received booster injections.
