Jaipur: Shashi Tharoor, Congress leader, complimented Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday, describing him as 'a man of enormous vitality and dynamism' and praising him for the BJP's success in the just ended Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections.
While talking with the media at the Jaipur Literature Festival, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor stated that while the Indian voter would surprise the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) one day, the people have given them what they wanted today.
Following his appreciation for the Prime Minister, the Congress leader also criticised him, saying that he has unleashed such forces in the society that are dividing our nation on communal and religious grounds which, in my opinion, is bringing an unfortunate toxin." Tharoor also expressed amazement at political experts calling the UP election results as a "foregone conclusion," noting that very few projected the BJP's victory before exit polls were released.
"Until the exit polls were out, there was no doubt in my mind that the majority of people expected a very close race, and some were reporting anecdotally that the Samajwadi Party was ahead," he said. He said, "The Indian voter is capable of surprising, and one day, they will surprise the BJP as well. However, they have finally handed the BJP what they desired." "Many people had not anticipated the BJP regaining power with such a majority. The Samajwadi Party's (SP) seats have increased, and as a result, they will make an effective opposition "said the Congress leader.
