Dr. Vali shares her expert steps for treating skin discoloration both at home and in-clinic.    Step 1: DIY Discoloration Defense    My first-line treatment for all dermal discoloration in topical skincare. There are a number of ingredients to look out for in your cosmeceuticals to help reduce your skin condition at home.

• Glutathione: known as a ’super-antioxidant this tri-peptide has significant Antimelanogenic properties which lend itself to the reduction of pigmentation and uneven skin tone. Glutathione is particularly effective and safe in reducing periorbital hyperpigmentation, the dark circles around the eyes

• Ascorbic acid: otherwise known as Vitamin C, is a versatile antioxidant protecting skin from free radicals as a result of environmental stress. Brightening the skin whilst it protects, Vitamin C can be effective in reducing hyperpigmentation and uneven skin tone by reducing melanogenesis - the creation of new pigment   Step 2: Prescription grade Perfection

Advancing from the beauty-counter cosmeceuticals, prescription-grade protocols from your Dermatologist or medical practitioner may prove efficacious in targeting more stubborn skin conditions. Medical grade skincare reaches the reticular dermis, the medical layer of the skin, allowing changes on a cellular level.

• Hydroquinone: this is known as the gold standard for treating hyperpigmentation disorders such as post-inflammatory pigmentation, freckles, and melasma. The action of topical hydroquinone is through the destruction of existing melanocytes and the prevention of new melanin production. Not without side effects, this well-established treatment may cause redness and irritation and increases photosensitivity, insufficient UV protection during use may trigger more severe hyperpigmentation. Close follow up with your skin-expert is a must when incorporating Hyrdoquinone into your skin-regime

• Tretinoin: the purest form of Vitamin A derivative is the strongest prescription-grade retinoid available. Increasing cellular turnover promoting skin regeneration, lending to its significant benefits in reducing wrinkles, acne, and scarring. When combined with topical melanin inhibitors, Tretinoin can significantly improve pigmentation and the overall skin tone   Step 3: In-Clinic Intervention

For those more stubborn and resistant discoloration disorders, my recommended in-house interventions should only be carried out by an experienced Dermatologist or Aesthetic practitioner with experience treating your specific skin type. All interventions should be used as part of a multi-modality treatment plan, treating the cause

• Microneedling: fractional micro-needling involves controlled injury to the epidermis stimulating a regenerative healing response and the production of new fibrinogen and collagen. This regeneration of skin cells can aid in dispersing clusters of melanin, lightening areas of pigmentation. Micro-needling also allows the penetration of prescription-grade products to the deeper layers of the dermis, directly targeting the site of pigmentation or inflammation.

• Mesotherapy: intradermal infusion of a bespoke cocktail of prescription-grade ingredients such as Glutathione, Vitamin C, Retinoids and Transexamic Acid offers targeted treatment for pigmentation and rosacea. Several sessions are required aligned with a prescription-grade skin protocol for significant improvement of conditions.

Whether establishing your at-home skincare regime, adhering to a prescription-grade protocol, or undertaking in-clinic treatments, adapting a multi-modality approach to skin discoloration is key to success. Identifying your individual skin type and skin condition is essential prior to select the best treatment.
