Third dose of mRNA vaccine wanes after 4 months: CDC study

According to a research from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), immunity against severe Covid-19 disease begins to wane four months after receiving the third dosage of an mRNA (messenger RNA) vaccine like Pfizer-BionNTech or Moderna .

According to the study, diminishing immunity was found during both the Delta and Omicron variant waves, comparable to how the effectiveness of an mRNA vaccine wanes after a second dosage.

Despite the fact that protection reduced over time, a third dose of Covid-19 was still very beneficial in preventing serious sickness.

"The mRNA vaccines, including the booster shot, are quite efficient, but their efficiency diminishes with time," said Indiana University co-author Brian Dixon.

"Our findings indicate that further dosages may be required to sustain Covid-19 protection, particularly in high-risk patients." Overall, the study found that people who received the second and third doses of an mRNA vaccine had better protection against hospitalizations (severe sickness) than those who received only the first dosage (symptoms which may not require hospitalisation).

COVID-19 vaccination coverage in India surpasses 172.29 crores.
