This K-pop Star Fined USD 11,500 for Drink-Driving on Electric Scooter

K-pop star Suga, a member of the popular boy band BTS, has been fined 15 million won (approximately US$11,500) by a South Korean court for drink-driving while riding an electric scooter.

A judge at the Seoul Western District Court issued the fine last week after the case was referred to prosecution.

In August, Suga publicly apologized for his actions, describing them as “careless and wrong.” Following the incident, police revoked his license for operating the e-scooter while under the influence.

According to his label, Big Hit Music, part of the K-pop firm HYBE, Suga fell while trying to park the scooter at night and subsequently failed a breath test to measure his blood alcohol level.

Since announcing a hiatus from group activities in June 2022, BTS members have been focusing on solo projects before starting their military service commitments. At 31, Suga has also engaged in social service work to fulfill his military duty.

This drink-driving incident adds to the list of times K-pop stars have struggled to maintain their pristine public images. Following the news, some fans expressed their disappointment by sending flower wreaths to HYBE headquarters with messages asking Suga to leave the band.

Individuals notified of summary judgments have the option to request a regular trial within seven days to contest the decision.

Suga’s label has not yet responded to inquiries regarding the incident.
