Tamil Nadu state celebrated the 72nd Republic Day with patriotic fervour on Tuesday with Governor Banwarilal Purohit hoisting the tricolour at the Marina beach in Chennai. He received the salute from the armed forces and other security agencies. Tamil Nadu Governor also paid his respects at the War Memorial at Rajaji Salai. TN Chief Minister K. Palaniswami, Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam and AIADMK ministers were also present in the occasion. Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami introduced top officials of Armed forces and the Police department to the President. Later, CM presented various awards including Anna Medal for Gallantry, Kottai Ameer award for communal harmony, Thiru C Narayanasamy Naidu Award for highest productivity in rice to the farmer who obtained the highest yield in the state under the system of rice intensification method for cultivation, best performing farmer producer company (Governance and business performance), Gandhi Adigal Police medals and Chief Minister's trophies for the best police stations. After the medal distribution, an acrobatic display of motorbikes followed by traditional cultural programs were conducted. Due to the Covid 19 fear, public and school students were asked not to participate in the Republic Day celebrations this year. Also, the college students cultural programs were missing this year. District collectors across the state unfurled the national flag and took the salute from the police contingents.
