CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu School Education Department is trying to implement projects such as folk art, music, and theatre in the next months in response to an earlier made declaration on a concentrated effort to promote extracurricular and co-curricular activities in government schools. This academic year, an amendment to the regular schedule of classes stated that students in classes VI through IX would receive two periods each week for extracurricular and co-curricular activities. "The department considers that art and culture should be an essential component of students' education and encourages students to express themselves in school. They will be promoted to learn and perform whatever they are skilled at, whether it be painting, performing arts, folk arts, or theatre, swaid R. Sudhan, State Project Director for Samagra Shiksha. He said that cultivating civic-minded, socially responsible students was a priority. "Students will select and study art forms they are interested in learning, and we will also hire professionals to instruct them. Also, competitions held throughout blocks and at the state level are anticipated to conclude all of these activities," he said. According to musician T.M. Krishna, who has been collaborating with the government on these programmes, attempts are being made to promote indigenous art forms among schoolchildren.
