Kolkata: In yet another blow to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Rupchand Mondal, a TMC panchayat pradhan in Amdanga, North 24 Parganas, was brutally murdered by assailants in a crowded market on Thursday. The attackers threw bombs at Mondal while he was on a call at Kamdevpur haat. He was quickly taken to a nearby health facility and later transferred to a private hospital in Barasat, where he succumbed to his injuries on Friday. The news of Mondal's death sparked outrage among local residents and TMC supporters, leading to protests and road blockades on National Highway 34. Demanding the immediate arrest of the culprits, the demonstrators expressed their grief and frustration. Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh visited the area and condemned the incident, calling it a "planned murder." He urged the police to swiftly apprehend those responsible for disrupting peace in the region. TMC spokesperson Joyprakash Majumdar accused the BJP and CPI(M) of creating a "reign of terror" in West Bengal's rural areas in the lead-up to the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections. Majumdar asserted that the opposition's strategy to weaken the TMC by targeting popular leaders would not succeed. However, BJP leader Dilip Ghosh alleged that internal conflicts within the TMC were behind Mondal's murder. The political landscape in West Bengal remains tense as incidents of violence and political killings continue to escalate. This incident follows the recent murder of TMC panchayat member Saifuddin Laskar in Joynagar, South 24 Parganas, which led to widespread tension, house burnings, and public outrage. In connection with Laskar's murder, CPI(M) leader Anisur Lashkar, the suspected mastermind, was arrested on Thursday. Despite differing narratives, the situation underscores the volatile political atmosphere in the state as elections approach.
