Tragic Collision Claims Lives of Indian Couple and Grandchild in Canada

Ottawa: An Indian couple visiting Canada and their 3-month-old grandchild were killed in a highway collision when a robbery suspect, being chased by Ontario Police and driving the wrong way, crashed into their vehicle. The tragic accident occurred in Canada, resulting in the deaths of four people, including the Indian couple and their grandchild.

According to Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU), the victims included a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman who were visiting from India. Additionally, the parents of the infant, a 33-year-old father and a 27-year-old mother from Ajax, were also in the vehicle. While the parents were both taken to the hospital for treatment, the mother suffered serious injuries, as stated by the SIU. The fatal car chase began with a robbery at a liquor store in Bowmanville, reported media sources. The chase ended about 20 minutes later when the suspect, driving a cargo van, led Durham police on a high-speed pursuit against traffic on Highway 401 in Whitby, approximately 50 kilometers east of Toronto.

A 38-year-old male passenger from the cargo van was also hospitalized with serious injuries. Autopsies for the victims were conducted in Toronto on Wednesday, as stated by the SIU. The SIU, an agency called in to investigate whenever police are involved in a death, serious injury, or allegations of sexual assault, is handling the investigation.

Milica Maljkovic Birkett, a witness to the deadly police chase who narrowly escaped, recounted her experience. She described not having time to think when the suspect van was coming toward her car on the wrong side of the road.

"I was like, 'Oh my God, like what just happened? What's going on?'" Maljkovic Birkett told CBC Toronto on Thursday. She expressed that it has taken time to process the experience. "It's so scary. For whatever reason, somehow my life was spared. But (four) others were taken, and that was just really heavy," she said.
