Trichy (Tamil Nadu): In a bizarre incident, a nineteen-year-old woman committed suicide by consuming pesticides in Tamil Nadu’s Trichy. The woman, in her at the hospital, told she took the extreme step after her father and aunt shamed her for having a baby as she was not married, police mentioned. For abetting her suicide, police have detained her father Selvamani (51) and his sister Malliga (55). On Thursday, the patient passed away while receiving care at the hospital. As per reports, the family left the child behind after he was born at their residence on December 5. However, police traced the mother of the child. The woman, a second-year student in a Trichy college, consumed pesticide and was admitted to the Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital on December 8 out of fear of being arrested and subjected to public humiliation. According to the police, the woman claimed in her will that her father and aunt had pushed her into taking her own life and that she had done so by ingesting pesticides that were kept in the house for agricultural use. Inspector Balaji of the Jeeyapuram police said on Friday that they had also purposefully delayed taking the woman to the hospital. The woman had reportedly an affair with a relative, a young man of 21. The family members abandoned the baby near Thobavanam in Thirupparaithurai in Trichy, as per police statement. On the basis of the woman’s statement, police arrested her father and aunt under IPC section 306. Meantime, the newborn baby is kept at the hospital. The child welfare committee of Trichy is yet to decide on his care.
