In a notable shift from his usual stance on immigration, former President Donald Trump has proposed granting green cards to foreign graduates of US colleges. This proposal marks a significant departure from his previous immigration policies.
In a podcast released on Thursday, Trump suggested that any foreign student who graduates from a US college should receive a green card along with their diploma. This statement contrasts sharply with President Joe Biden's recent efforts to tighten immigration controls, despite his actions to offer a path to citizenship for immigrants married to US citizens.
Trump stated, "What I want to do and what I will do is, you graduate from a college, I think you should get automatically as part of your diploma a green card to be able to stay in this country." He emphasized that this policy should apply to all graduates, including those from two-year junior colleges and doctoral programs.
When asked if he would commit to bringing the "best and the brightest around the world to America," Trump affirmed, "I do promise." He shared stories of foreign graduates who, unable to stay in the US, returned to countries like India and China, where they built successful companies and created thousands of jobs.
Trump highlighted the need for skilled workers in US companies, saying, "They can't even make a deal with a company because they don't think they're going to be able to stay in the country. That is going to end on day one."
During his presidency from 2017 to 2021, Trump implemented strict immigration policies, including building a wall on the US-Mexico border and imposing travel bans on several Muslim-majority countries. In contrast, President Biden has recently eased visa regulations for about 500,000 spouses of US citizens and simplified procedures for "Dreamers," undocumented migrants brought to the US as children, allowing them to obtain work visas if they have college degrees and high-skilled job offers.
These recent actions by Biden, including his June executive order limiting asylum claims during high migration surges, have drawn criticism from Republicans.
