TTP Top commander killed in Afghan bombing

ISLAMABAD:  The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) on Monday said that one of its top commanders, who was responsible for some of the bloodiest strikes in recent memory, was killed in a bombing in Afghanistan.

According to news reports, Abdul Wali Mohmand, also known as Omar Khalid Khorasani, was on the US State Department's wanted list and was offering a reward of up to USD 3 million for information on his state of affairs, reports DPA news agency.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan claims that on Sunday in the Pakistani border province of Paktika, Afghanistan, a roadside bomb struck Khorasani's car.

The bombing occurred exactly one week after a US drone strike in Kabul killed Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri, and at least two other commanders were also killed.

Although Khorasani is believed to have known al-Zawahiri and Osama bin Laden, the connection between the explosion and the drone strike wasn't immediately clear.

He once split from TTP and started his own organisation, Jamaat ul Ahrar.

His group was responsible for some of the deadliest assaults in Pakistan, such as the Easter Sunday bombing in Lahore in 2016 that left at least 75 members of the minority Christian community dead.
