UK Health Security: Omicron infections in UK to cross 2-Lac daily

LONDON: According to the UK Health Security Agency, the number of daily Omicron infections in the UK is expected to be over 200,000. The modelling-based predictions came after UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned of a "tidal wave" of Omicron infections in a televised statement on Sunday.

Sajid Javid, the Health Secretary, has warned that Omicron cases will "dramatically increase." "It's critical that we remember that infections lag hospitalizations and deaths by roughly two weeks, so we can expect those numbers to drastically rise in the days and weeks ahead," Javid said in the House of Commons.

He told MPs that there are currently 4,713 cases of Omicron in the UK, and that the number is growing "According to the UK Health Security Agency, the current rate of, and number of daily infections is approximately 200,000.

"While Omicron accounts for over 20 percent of cases in England, it has already risen to over 44 percent in London, and we expect it to overtake Covid 19 as the main variety in the capital within the next 48 hours." During the weekend, the UK's four chief medical officers upgraded the Covid alert level to four, the second-highest level, while the NHS said on Monday that its alert level had been elevated to the highest "level four national incident."
