UK imposes further lockdowns as new corona variant wreaks havoc in European countries

London:  In view of increasing corona cases due to new strain, The British government said on Wednesday more areas of England would be placed under the strictest COVID-19 restrictions.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock said the Midlands, the northeast, parts of the north-west and parts of the south-west would be moved into Tier 4 from 00.01 on Thursday. He said, “The NHS  is under very significant pressure; there are over 21,000 people in hospital with coronavirus right now." He further added, “Unfortunately this new variant is now spreading across most of England and cases are doubling fast. It is, therefore, necessary to apply tier four to a wider area.”

The  UK reported over 50,000 corona cases in a span of 24 hours for the second consecutive day, pushing the total number of infections to over 24 lakh on Wednesday. The UK also recorded 981 deaths in a day due to new corona strain, taking the fatality toll since the pandemic began to 72,548.
