UK PM fights on, but hit by new wave of resignations

LONDON: Three more members of UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson's government resigned on Wednesday, dealing him a fresh blow after he recently survived a challenge to his leadership, media reports said. Will Quince, Robin Walker, Laura Trott, and other education ministers met on Wednesday, reports BBC.

While Laura Trott stated that she was leaving due to a loss of "confidence" in the government, Will Quince said that he had "no choice but to present my resignation."

The resignations have added to the pressure on the Prime Minister following the departure of his health and finance ministers. Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid, two of Boris Johnson's top cabinet members, left the government on Tuesday.

I have informed the Prime Minister of my intention to resign from my position as Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. It has been a tremendous honour to serve in this capacity, but I regret that I am unable to do so any longer, Javid said in a tweet. As he has "lost trust" in the Prime Minister, Javid claimed he cannot continue to serve in Boris Johnson's cabinet in "good conscience."

Setting out his decision to quit in a letter, he wrote: "I am instinctively a team player, but the British people also rightly expect integrity from their Government."  Your colleagues, your party, and eventually the nation are affected by the tone and values you set as a leader. At their best, conservatives are viewed as tough decision-makers who are motivated by strong values. Even though we weren't always well-liked, we were capable of acting in the country's best interests.
