UNITED NATIONS: The United Nations to decide the best course of action for reviving the Sustainable Development Goals. The UN High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development goals (SDGs) got underway on Tuesday
According to a UN press release, the eight-day event, held under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), "takes place as several crises throughout the world are putting the very sustainability of achieving the SDGs by 2030 at risk."
In line with a renewed commitment to multilateralism and international collaboration, the statement stated that "an urgent rescue effort and concerted initiatives are needed to rapidly shift direction and set the world on track towards a sustainable future."
ECOSOC President Collen Vixen Kelapile said, "we are facing persistent vaccination inequality, growing inflation, significant supply-chain disruptions, and debilitating geopolitical uncertainty." "If we do not take action right away, we will put future generations in peril. We have the power to change the course of events."
In order to address the effects of the ongoing pandemic and the military conflict in Ukraine, including global economic inflation, rising inequalities, and closely related crises in food security, energy supplies, and finance, thousands of participants - including heads of state, more than 100 ministers, leaders and representatives of the UN system, business, and civil society- will participate in person.
