Ukraine's membership in NATO would harm bloc's ties with Russia

MOSCOW: Ukraine's admittance to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) would jeopardise relations between Russia and the alliance, said Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

"Everyone recognises that Ukraine is not ready (to join NATO) and will not contribute to NATO's security," Lavrov said in an interview on Russian television. Lavrov reaffirmed the principle of "security indivisibility," which states that no state should strengthen its own security at the expense of others'.

The top diplomat, responding to claims that NATO is defensive, recalled how the US-led military alliance "bombed Yugoslavia for nearly three months, invaded Libya in violation of a UN Security Council decision, and acted in Afghanistan," according to reports.

Russia is making official requests to NATO and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe member countries, pushing them to explain what they intend to do under this concept, he said.
