United Nations: A senior UN official has reaffirmed his support for Libya's upcoming elections. Raisedon Zenenga, Assistant Secretary-General and Coordinator of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), made his remarks during a virtual consultation with a diverse group of civil society representatives from across the country, according to reports. "Participants shared their perspectives on elections, with a common message that the goal of the elections should be to deliver stability and enable the country to emerge from recurrent political crises," the UNSMIL said in a Twitter post.
Zenenga praised the participants' cooperation with the UNSMIL and emphasised the importance of civil society in ensuring a stable, peaceful, and democratic Libya. "He reaffirmed UNSMIL's commitment to assisting Libyans in holding elections that are timely, credible, and inclusive, in accordance with the Libyan political road map and relevant UN Security Council resolutions, and that will result in Libyan stability," according to the mission.
The UN-sponsored Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) selected a new executive authority of a unity government and a presidency council in February, bringing the North African country's years of political division to an end. The main task of the new authority, as endorsed by the LPDF, is to prepare for the general elections on December 24. Elections were originally scheduled for December 2018, but were pushed back to early 2019.
