Vikram Misri Lands in Dhaka for Bilateral Talks Amid Tensions Over Attacks on Hindus

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri landed in Dhaka on Monday to lead the Indian delegation at the next round of the India-Bangladesh Foreign Office Consultation (FOC). This high-level engagement marks the first such meeting since the political transition in Bangladesh in August. The last FOC was held in New Delhi in November 2023.

Misri's visit comes amid growing concerns over violence against minorities in Bangladesh, particularly recent attacks on Hindu temples. During his trip, the Indian Foreign Secretary is expected to meet with his counterpart and participate in multiple discussions on matters of mutual concern, including bilateral trade and security issues.

The visit is also significant as it is the first major diplomatic engagement between India and Bangladesh after the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh, led by Muhammad Yunus. Misri is set to meet with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Advisor, Md Touhid Hossain, to discuss ways to restore ties to a "completely normal" state, according to Hossain's statements.

Concerns about rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh have been growing, with reports of attacks on Hindu communities. On December 6, the Mahabhagya Lakshminarayan Mandir in Dhor village, near Dhaka, was allegedly set on fire by unknown assailants. Temple supervisor Babul Ghosh reported that the attackers poured petrol on the idols, but fled when he approached. He suggested the attackers may have had ulterior motives beyond the destruction of the idols.

The ongoing unrest includes the arrest of spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das, who remains in detention on sedition charges. His arrest followed accusations that he and others disrespected the national flag during a Hindu community rally. The Bangladesh Ministry of External Affairs is under pressure to ensure that Das’s legal rights are respected and that his trial is fair.

India has emphasized the importance of maintaining diplomatic dialogue to address these tensions while continuing to strengthen bilateral relations between the two nations.
