Dhaka: Hindu monk Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, arrested and charged with sedition in Bangladesh, will remain in custody until January 2, as the Chattogram court postponed his bail hearing. The adjournment came after the prosecution claimed that the monk lacked legal representation.

The Bangladesh Sammilita Sanatani Jagran Jote, a group that Chinmoy Krishna represents, alleged that nearly 70 Hindu lawyers were "falsely sued in a case to prevent their participation" in his fresh bail hearing.

Although ISKCON Bangladesh disassociated from Chinmoy Krishna in October for disciplinary reasons, ISKCON Kolkata’s Vice-President, Radharamn Das, expressed strong disapproval of the delays in justice. He highlighted on social media that defense lawyers have been targeted, including an alleged attack on advocate Regan Acharya shortly after the monk’s arrest.

Earlier, the sixth metropolitan magistrate in Chattogram rejected Chinmoy Krishna’s initial bail plea on November 26. This decision sparked clashes, resulting in the death of a lawyer, Saiful Islam Alif.

Meanwhile, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage the United Nations in deploying a peacekeeping force in Bangladesh to protect minorities. ISKCON Kolkata voiced support for this appeal, thanking the chief minister for drawing attention to the issue.

Radharamn Das said, "Democracy is in jeopardy in Bangladesh, and the basic human rights of minorities are being compromised." He also shared an image of wounded advocate Ramen Roy, who is reportedly fighting for his life after being attacked for defending Chinmoy Krishna.

The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by minorities and their defenders in Bangladesh, raising concerns over human rights and judicial impartiality in the country.
