PORTUGAL: Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, the spiritual leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslim community, has passed away at the age of 88. The Aga Khan Development Network confirmed that he died peacefully in Lisbon on February 4, 2025, surrounded by his loved ones.
Aga Khan IV became the 49th hereditary Imam of the Shia Ismaili Muslims in 1957 at just 20 years old, succeeding his grandfather. AKDN has also been active in environmental conservation, disaster relief, and private-sector growth. In its statement, the organization offered condolences to his family and the Ismaili community while pledging to continue his lifelong mission of enhancing lives globally, regardless of faith or background.
Prince Karim Aga Khan’s last visit to Kenya was in April 2018 during his Diamond Jubilee celebrations, marking 60 years of his spiritual leadership.
In 1957, Prince Karim Aga Khan became the leader (imam) of the Ismaili Muslim community, following his grandfather. Over time, he became well-known not just for his religious role but also for his work in global development and culture.
