Why doesn't Farooq Abdullah want to be president?

Srinagar: National Conference (NC) president and former Jammu and Kashmir CM Farooq Abdullah has withdrawn his name as the united opposition candidate for the presidential election, saying he would like to play his role in paving the way for Jammu and Kashmir, which is passing through a very crucial phase. He, however, thanked opposition leaders for pushing his name for the proposed presidential election next month.

According to a statement issued by the NC, the Lok Sabha member said that he (Farooq Abdullah) is honoured to have his name proposed by West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee as a possible candidate of the united opposition for the post of President of India. Abdullah said in a statement, "After Mamata didi proposed my name, I got calls from several opposition leaders and they are supporting my name as a candidate. '

The former Jammu and Kashmir CM said he had discussed the "unexpected" development with senior leaders and family members of his party. Abdullah said, "I am extremely happy and honoured with the support I have received that my name for the highest office of the country has been churned out. I believe that Jammu and Kashmir is going through a very important time at the moment and it needs my efforts in these uncertain times. '
