New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge, the leader of the opposition in the Rajya Sabha, has written to Upper House Chairman and Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu over media access to Parliament. He has urged that the restriction on journalists entering Parliament be lifted. According to the letter, some members of the press are permitted to visit the press gallery. Senior journalists are not permitted to visit the Central Hall. They are not even permitted to meet with members of the House of Commons. New limitations have been placed, effectively excluding the media from this democratic shrine. In his letter, Kharge stated that Parliament is the focal point of political action during the winter session. All of the hot topics discussed in the House have been covered by the media in a responsible manner. As a result, given the importance of the media, it should be publicly admitted into Parliament. Several MPs including the Speaker of the House have been briefed on the issue by leading journalists and media organisations. According to him, the press gallery should only have seating arrangements for journalists that follow the Corona procedure. However, it is unacceptable to bar journalists from entering the Parliament complex and preventing them from seeing the Central Hall and Library. He has requested the Chairman to fix the matter so that the media may continue to conduct its work unhindered.
