Kochi: In the Kerala cabinet, it has been decided to issue a new ordinance to withdraw section 118A in the Police Act. This change was described by the people as freedom of expression and attack on the media. Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said that the decision has been taken after a special cabinet meeting on Tuesday. He also said that the government would recommend to the Governor of Kerala to issue an ordinance to repeal Section 118A in the Kerala Police Act. He said that many people have expressed concern that there is a possibility of misuse of the law because it gives more powers to the police. CM Vijayan said in a statement that we value people's opinion and have decided to withdraw it because there are many apprehensions about it. CM Vijayan has said that a new law will be passed only after detailed discussion and opinion of all the parties in the assembly. The Kerala government had decided to change the Kerala Police Act as part of an effort to investigate the widespread malicious campaign through social media which was said that this would pose a threat to the constitutionally ensured personal freedom and dignity of the citizens.
