India's chief national coach Pullela Gopichand may contest for the post of general secretary in the Badminton Association of India (BAI) elections. Elections are due for this on March 25. Saina Nehwal won the bronze while PV Sindhu won the silver medal under Gopichand's guidance in the Olympics. He is also expected to file his nomination on Thursday. A BAI source with knowledge of the matter has told the media that, "Gopichand is going to challenge for the post of general secretary and he is also expected to file his nomination tomorrow." However, according to the BAI constitution, only outgoing Office bearers or members of the outgoing executive committee are contesting elections for the post of general secretary and Gopichand does not fulfill this eligibility. Candidates can file nominations from March 9 to 11 while the last date for withdrawal of nominations is March 17 to 19. The returning officer is scheduled to prepare the final list of candidates on March 20. Gopichand has also been the secretary of the Telangana Badminton Association and a member of the selection panel. Himanta Vishwa Sarma is almost certain to be re-elected as the president while Ajay Singhania, the current general secretary of BAI, is also expected to challenge for the second term. Big news!
