Will Sonia and Rahul Gandhi be arrested? ED calls for 2000 crore scam in National Herald case

New Delhi: The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has summoned Congress party's interim president Sonia Gandhi and former national president Rahul Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case. Sonia Gandhi has been summoned for questioning on June 8. Reacting to this, senior Congress leader and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi said, "We will not bow down and will fight. Singhvi said Sonia Gandhi herself will go to the ED office and answer all the questions.

The political rhetoric against the Gandhi family has also intensified after the probe agency's summons. All the big leaders of the Congress have taken over the front. Congress party's national spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said, "Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi have been summoned by the ED as part of a conspiracy in the National Herald case. But we will not be "afraid, we will not bow down... They will fight with a chest. At the same time, senior Congress leader and lawyer Abhishek Manu Singhvi has alleged that the ED had earlier closed the case. "The BJP is using puppet agencies to scare its political opponents. Earlier on April 12, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had questioned Congress leader Pawan Bansal in connection with the money laundering case related to the National Herald. During this time, he was questioned about many aspects including financial transactions. It is being told that, if the evidence comes out in the interrogation and investigation, the ED can also arrest Sonia and Rahul.  

What is the National Herald case? 

Bjp's Rajya Sabha MP Subramanian Swamy had levelled baseless allegations against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, late leader Motilal Vora, journalist Suman Dubey and technocrat Sam Pitroda in the National Herald case. He alleged that it was wrongfully acquired through Young India Ltd and that Congress leaders grabbed assets up to Rs 2,000 crore. The investigation into the case was initiated by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in 2014. The Congress has been saying that the aim of Young India Limited is not to make a profit but it has been formed for charity.
