THANE: A 36-year-old woman from Mumbai's Thane city was allegedly cheated of Rs22.67 lakh by a guy who had befriended her on social media, Facebook. A case in this regard was registered on Thursday, police said on Friday. The woman works an online executive, reported to the police that she had received a friend request from a man in February 2022. The man informed her that he desperately needed money to pay for his mother's treatment after they began communicating frequently online. The woman sent him money as a favour. This happened on a number of occasions, as per the woman. She allegedly paid him Rs7,25,000 and also gave him jewellery worth Rs15,42,688. At the Vartak Nagar police station, a case was filed under Indian Penal Code section 406 (criminal breach of trust), and further investigation is ongoing. As of yet, no one has been arrested.
