Sudan: The World Bank has approved a USD100 million relief package for flood victims in South Sudan. Ousmane Dione, World Country Director for Eritrea, Ethiopia, South Sudan, and Sudan in the Eastern and Southern Africa area, told media in Juba, South Sudan's capital, that the already approved monies will be available to the government in mid-2022. "We feel the flooding in South Sudan should be handled seriously," Dione added. "Funds have already been approved and will hopefully be given." More than 840,000 people have been displaced by flooding in South Sudan's seven states since May 2021.According to UN organisations, the floods have worsened an already severe humanitarian situation, with 7.2 million people at risk of starvation, including millions of children. The World Bank has already committed usd 265 million to various ongoing initiatives in the agricultural, health, social protection, and community resilience sectors. Dione went on to say that they have raised an additional USD 38 million to help South Sudanese refugees and their host communities. Furthermore, he stated that they are not only supporting development programmes, but also funding capacity building in the youngest country.
