Youth arrested for raping 11-year-old in Delhi's Wazirabad

NEW DELHI: A 28-year-old man was detained for allegedly raping a minor girl in north Delhi's Wazirabad locality, police said on Wednesday.

The 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by the neighbor in September, according to a complaint made by the girl's parents. They said, the suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday and is a cook in the Gandhi Nagar neighborhood.

Police said the matter came to the fore after the girl detailed her ordeal to her mother following which she approached the Wazirabad police.

The neighbor and the girl's family reside in the same house, divided into rooms, police said. According to a senior police official, the victim was also threatened with severe repercussions if she disclosed the incident to anybody.

Based on the minor's medical report,  a case was filed under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act and sections of the Indian Penal Code, including sections 376 (rape), 377 (unnatural offences), and 506 (criminal intimidation), according to Sagar Singh Kalsi, deputy commissioner of police (North).
