Ustad Zakir Hussain has been awarded Padma Bhushan

Ustad Zakir Hussain (born 9 March 1951) is an Indian tabla virtuoso, musician, talaq, music producer, film actor and eldest son of tabla maestro Ustad Allah Rakha. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1988 by the Government of India, and the Padma Bhushan in 2002, which was presented by President Abdul Kalam. He was also honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award of Sangeet Natak Akademi, National Music Academy of India, Dance and Drama in 1990. In 1999, he was awarded the United States National Endowment for the National Heritage of Arts Fellowship, the highest award given to traditional artists and musicians.

Zakir Hussain was born on 9 March 1951 in a Punjabi family in a nursing home in Mahim (a suburb of Mumbai) at around 11:00 am. [1] Hussain was born to tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha. His mother's name was Bavi Begum. It is said that Hussain was an 'inauspicious' child, as his father was extremely ill at the time of his birth. Although his family name is Qureshi, Zakir was given the surname Hussein. He attended St. Michael's High School in Mahim, and briefly attended St. Xavier's College, Mumbai.

Hussain was a child. His father taught him pakhawaj from the age of 3. His father used to wake him up at 3 am and teach him orally by reciting different rhythms till 6 in the morning. Zakir's father Alla Rakha was associated with the tabla-playing tradition of the Punjab gharana, the other gharanas were Delhi, Banaras, Azarra, Farrukhabad. And belongs to Lucknow.

He gave his first concert at the age of seven and was considered a child sensible. He had been touring since the age of eleven. He went to the United States in 1970 with sitar player Ravi Shankar. [1] After the tour was over, he planned to study for a Ph.D. Instead he moved to the Gulf region to join Ali Akbar Khan, who needed a tabla player. He then began his international career, which included more than 150 concerts a year.
