India to roll out the Covid 19 vaccine possibly in the forthcoming weeks in a way to be ready for inoculation the Union health ministry has sent the new operational guidelines to states and Union territories for the distribution of the vaccine against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) as and when it becomes available. Union health minister Harsh Vardhan has made an announcement that India will look to vaccinate 250-300 million people against Covid-19 in the first phase on priority by July next year.

As on December 13, 2020 India's Covid 19 tally reached 98,57,029 with death toll at 143,019. Nine vaccine candidates are in fray and 3 have applied for Emergency usage approval. 

1. The New SOP say, healthcare workers, frontline workers and to people above 50 years of age are the first to get vaccinated. It will be followed by the younger than 50 years of age with associated comorbidities based on evolving pandemic situation and then the rest. 

2. Above 50 is sub-divided into above 60 and between 50 and 60 as inoculation can be made depending on the situation. 

3. To identify population aged 50 years or more, the latest electoral roll for Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly election will be used. 

4. Vaccination of high risk population other than healthcare and frontline workers as they would be vaccinated at fixed session sites might require outreach session sites, and mobile sites or teams. States and UTs are advised to identify the specific needs and plan to meet the need. 

5. A session will vaccinate 100 pre-registered beneficiaries following the prioritization. There is no on-the-spot vaccination of beneficiaries at the vaccination site. 

6. Vaccine will be rolled out only after the training is completed at the district, block, and planning units.

7. A team consists of five members. A doctor (MBBS/BDS) will be the vaccinator, staff nurse, pharmacist, auxiliary nurse midwife (ANM), lady health visitor (LHV) . 

8. There will be a vaccination officer 1 with at least one person from the police, home guard, civil defence, National Cadet Corps, National Service Scheme or Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan to check the registration status of the beneficiary at the entry point and to ensure guarded entry to the vaccination session. 

9. The vaccination officer 2 acts as a verifier who will authenticate or verify the identification documents while the vaccination officer 3 and 4 will be the two-support staff duly for crowd management, information education and communication, and support the vaccinator. 

10. Co-WIN application system will be used to track the listed beneficiaries for vaccination and Covid-19 vaccines status on a real-time basis. 

11. The existing adverse event following immunisation (AEFI) surveillance system will also be used. It is used to monitor adverse events and inform the understanding of the safety profile of the vaccines.
