Assam: Recently it has been revealed that in the last 8years there have been cases of killing 107 people by calling them, witches. Assam Parliamentary Affairs Minister Chandra Mohan Patwari gave this information in the state assembly on Saturday. Replying to a written question by Congress MLA Nandita Das, he said that 'From 2011 to May 2016, 80 people have died in this case, while 23 more people also died till October this year when the BJP-led government comes to power in the state.'

According to the information, Patwari on behalf of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal said that the state government had notified the Assam Witch Hunting (Prohibition, Prevention and Protection) Act, 2015 in October last year and the government was running an awareness campaign against superstition. Patwari told the House that Kokrajhar, Chirang, and Udalguri districts falling under 'Bodoland Territorial Area Districts' (BTAD) area recorded the highest number of deaths as 22,19 and 11 respectively.

According to the sources, Patwari said 9 people were killed in Biswanath, 7 in Gowalpara, 6-6 in Nagaon and Tinsukia and 4-4 in Karbi Anglong and Majuli districts. The minister said that from May 2016 till now, 12 men and 11 women among 23 people died in 'Witch Hunting'.
