16 districts of Assam submerged in floods: ASDMA

Guwahati: Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued a statement saying that at least 2.58 lakh people have been affected by the floods in Assam. The water level of the Brahmaputra and its tributaries is rising at a good pace, making the flood situation in Assam worse. Out of 34 districts of Assam, about 16 districts have been submerged in flood waters. The most affected districts are Barpeta, Lakhimpur, Majuli, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar, Sonitpur, Vishwanath, Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup and Tinsukia.

Gyanendra Tripathi, Chief Office Executive, ASDMA said, "Due to incessant rains in the upper region, the water of Brahmaputra is rising, causing widespread flooding. But now it is under control. No major embankment has been breached. Bongaigaon and Only minor damage has been reported in embankments in Nagaon. No loss of human life has been reported so far. According to sources, there are 87,337 women and 47,377 children among the affected. About 61 houses have been washed away in the floods in Lakhimpur and Sivasagar districts. A total of nine roads have been washed away in Barpeta, Vishwanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar districts.So far a total of 732 villages under 40 revenue divisions have been affected by the floods.

According to Tripathi, the rivers in the state are maintaining an increasing trend in most of the districts affected by the floods. Apart from this, rivers are flowing above the danger mark at many other places. The worst affected districts are Lakhimpur, Majuli and Dhemaji with 1,05,257, 57,256 and 35,539 cases respectively. 6,218 people had to leave their homes to take shelter in 24 relief camps set up by the district administrations of Bongaigaon, Chirang, Dhemaji and Majuli. The districts of Baksa, Dibrugarh and Jorhat have also set up relief centers for the affected people.
