New Delhi: Altaf's death in Uttar Pradesh has once again sparked an argument over police custody deaths. In the last 20 years, 1,888 people have died in police custody across the country. While only 26 policemen were found guilty. According to the National Crime Records Bureau, 893 cases have been registered against policemen in-custody death cases across the country, looking at the data of the last 20 years. Charge sheets were filed against 358. But only 26 policemen were found guilty in these cases.
A study of NCRB data shows that the highest number of 11 policemen was found guilty in 2006 of custody deaths. Seven policemen were convicted in UP and four in Madhya Pradesh. Last year, in 2020, 76 people died in custody. Gujarat has reported the highest number of 15 deaths. Similar cases have also been reported from Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and West Bengal. However, no one has been convicted last year.
NCRB has released data on arresting policemen in custody death cases since 2017. In the last four years, 96 policemen have been arrested in connection with the custody deaths. However, this does not include the data of the last year. According to Bureau data since 2001, the "not on remand" category has recorded 1,185 deaths and 703 deaths in the "in remand" category.
