Assam floods: 190 people died so far, 9 lakh people affected

New Delhi: Assam, one of the northeastern states of the country is facing a severe crisis these days. The floods caused such havoc here, in which 190 people lost their lives. Eleven districts of the state have been submerged in flood waters. About 9 million people are still in the grip of it. Three more people, including a child, have died in the last 24 hours. While two persons drowned in Cachar and Nagaon districts, one person lost his life in a landslide in Hailakandi.

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), a total of 8,88,177 people have been affected due to floods in Bajli, Cachar, Chirang, and Dibrugarh, Hailakandi, Kamrup, Karimganj, Morigaon, Nagaon, Sivasagar and Tamulpur districts. The worst situation is in the Cachar district. Over 5.63 lakh people have been affected here, followed by Morigaon and Nagaon, where 1.52 lakh and 1.45 lakh people are affected by the floods. The ASDMA report said that 620 villages are still inundated. More than 14,402 hectares of agricultural land have been submerged in water. Authorities are running 173 relief camps in 10 districts where 75,185 people have taken shelter.

At the same time, large-scale erosion has been reported in Barpeta, Vishwanath, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Majuli, Morigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Tinsukia and Udalguri districts, while Hailakandi and Karimganj districts of southern Assam have reported some cases of landslides. In Karimganj, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Sivasagar, Barpeta, Kamrup and Majuli districts, the flood waters have caused extensive damage to bridges, dams and roads. A total of 1,42,173 animals have been affected by the floods in four districts, the report said.
