KOCHI: Two customs officers were detained by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Thursday, July 15 for allegedly helping gold smuggling through the Thiruvananthapuram international airport.

Anish Mohammed and Nithin, two employees of the Customs Air Intelligence unit, were both summoned to their offices and placed under arrest.

They were later brought in front of a judge, who ordered that they remain in judicial detention until June 29.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials discovered audio clips of several employees discussing how they were allegedly assisting people smuggling gold through the airport while maintaining a close vigil at the Thiruvananthapuram airport.

A recent foreign passenger who had been cleared by customs was detained by a special DRI squad, and it was discovered that he was carrying gold.

This DRI investigation showed customs officers who were allegedly providing assistance to the traffickers.

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence plays a crucial role in protecting India's economy, national security, and social fabric. By curbing smuggling and illicit trade, it helps maintain a level playing field for legitimate businesses, prevents revenue loss to the government, and safeguards public health and safety.
