Since the start of nuclear tests on July 16, 1945, more than 2,000 nuclear tests have been carried out. The devastating effects of nuclear weapons on people were given little attention in the early days. However, history has clearly demonstrated the consequences of nuclear weapons testing. In comparison to the past, such doomsday weapons have become much more deadly as technology progressed.
The United Nations General Assembly unanimously adopted resolution 64/35 in December 2009, designating August 29 as the International Day Against Nuclear Tests. The UN resolution has called on increasing awareness about the ill effects of nuclear weapons testing and the need to stop these atomic explosions to achieve the goal of a nuclear-weapon-free world.
The resolution was introduced by the Republic of Kazakhstan, together with other sponsors and cosponsors, to mark the closing of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site on August 29, 1991. The International Day Against Nuclear Tests was commemorated for the first time in 2010. Many international and intergovernmental pacts have been negotiated since the creation of this resolution to implement the nuclear test moratorium.
The International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons is observed on this day every year. With the idea that nuclear disarmament and the eradication of nuclear weapons are the only safeguards against a world free of nuclear weapons, the General Assembly declared 26 September as the “International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons". This day was first observed for the first time in September 2014.
