New Delhi: 3 March 2009, it is a black day that Sri Lankan cricketers will never forget. The Sri Lankan team, which went on a Pak tour was scheduled to play a series of two Test matches. But no one thought that the end of the series would be such that no match would be played in Pakistan for the next 10 years. The reason for this was the terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team. Sri Lankan players were attacked by terrorists in Pakistan.
All the Sri Lankan players were going towards the grounds from the hotel, when bullets started pouring on the bus. By the time someone could understand something, there were dead bodies. Although no player was killed in this attack, but six security personnel and two civilians were killed. Actually, the second match between Sri Lanka and Pakistan was being played at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore. The first two days were spent in this match, which started on March 1. But on the third day i.e. March 3, the Sri Lankan team left for the ground by going to the hotel by bus. The team had not even reached the halfway point when a group of terrorists surrounded the bus from all sides.
Terrorists started firing indiscriminately on the bus until the security personnel could understand something. All the cricketers sitting in the bus bowed down, yet some players were injured. Five Sri Lankan cricketers were injured in this attack. In which Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Ajanta Mendis suffered minor injuries, but Thilan Samaraweera and Tharanga Parvitarana were severely injured. This attack was so dangerous that the players had panic for a long time. After this, no one was taking the name of going to Pakistan again in the team. After this attack, the Sri Lankan team left their tour midway and returned and did not visit Pakistan for 10 years.
