Chandigarh: The number of people who died due to drinking poisonous liquor has reached 41 in the districts bordering Punjab, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur. The Amarinder government of Punjab has discharged its responsibility after ordering the investigation of the incident. In the operation of raids conducted by the police overnight, 8 people have been detained and poisonous and raw liquor has been recovered from many places.
In Punjab, Amritsar, Tarn Taran, and Gurdaspur districts, this process of death by drinking poisonous liquor has started since Thursday night. By 7 am on Saturday, the death toll has reached 41. On Friday, Punjab CM Capt Amarinder Singh has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident, but the government and the administration are not ready to talk to the media on these issues. In many villages of Tarn Taran district, people are not only extracting liquor in their homes but are also operating illegal bars in homes with the police.
Meanwhile, the police raided several places on Friday night and recovered a large amount of poisonous liquor. Meanwhile, till Saturday morning, 20 people have died in Tarn Taran, 13 in Amritsar, and 8 in Gurdaspur. There is an atmosphere of mourning in about a dozen villages from these deaths. No representative of the Punjab government has come to take the plight of these villagers. According to Punjab DGP Dinkar Gupta, the police are constantly conducting raids. The culprits are being arrested. Eight teams of police are continuously taking action. No accused will be released.
