43% of Indians are depressed reveals a study

A new study reveals that 43% of Indian population has been suffering from depression owing to the coronavirus pandemic hit India over five months back. GOQii, a smart-tech enabled preventive healthcare platform made a study that surveyed over 10,000 Indians to understand how they have been coping with the new normal of lockdown, covid 19 protocols. This study revealed 26 per cent respondents were suffering from mild depression, 11 per cent were suffering from moderated depression, and six per cent were facing severe symptoms of depression.

The lockdown series, anxiety, Job cuts, Health scares, the volatile environment has changed the stress levels of a person surging its highest. The ample stress leads to depression. The study relied on self-administered Patient Health Questionnaire or PHQ-9 (a form of primary care evaluation of mental disorders) to monitor the severity of depression in the respondents. Nine aspects of an individual's daily routine, and interest levels in activities, appetite, sleep cycles, ability to concentrate, and energy levels are taken into consideration. The uncertainty in health can be controlled with a balanced diet, changes in lifestyle and appropriate sleep patterns said Vishal Gondal, Founder and CEO, GOQii. The high depression results in lack or little interest or pleasure in doing things more than 59% of those surveyed told and 38% of it felt hopeless, dealing with erratic sleep cycles, poor eating habits, low levels of energy, low self esteem, having trouble concentrating, being restless, and having thoughts of self harm.

57% felt tired or felt having little energy on some days of the week leading to more sleep or trouble in sleeping.  The study suggested that adding exercising to one's daily routine could help improve the mental health. Exercise helps in Endocrine secretion which helps to come out of depression. The more depressed you are, the more likely you are to not workout. Positive hope that things will change and everything will be alright soon helps in boosting oneself and makes enthusiastic.
