Petrapole: On November 1, troops from the Integrated Check Post (ICP) at Petrapole, along with the 145 Battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) under the South Bengal Frontier, successfully thwarted a significant gold smuggling attempt. They apprehended a truck driver who was transporting 60 gold biscuits from Bangladesh to India.

The estimated weight of the seized gold biscuits is approximately 6.998 kg, with a total value of around Rs 4,32,86,217. The apprehended smuggler has been identified as 23-year-old Suraj Mag, hailing from the village of Joypur in North 24 Parganas, West Bengal.

According to the BSF South Bengal Frontier, the accused works as a professional driver and has been operating this transport truck for approximately one year. His regular trips take him from Kolkata to the Benapole land port in Bangladesh via ICP Petrapole, carrying loaded goods. On October 30, he transported export goods consisting of 400 bags of black masterbatches through the Cargo gate of ICP Petrapole. After unloading the export goods on October 31, a Bangladeshi national named Md Mamoon approached him, offering to pay him 10,000 Bangladeshi Taka to smuggle gold into India. Desperate for funds to cover his mother's medical expenses, the driver accepted the offer. He concealed the gold inside the truck and departed from Benapole land port with an empty truck. The illicit cargo was discovered on November 1 when the truck reached the vehicle checking area at ICP Petrapole. Border Security Force troops intercepted the vehicle, revealing 60 gold biscuits hidden in the backseat cabin.

A K Arya, DIG and Public Relations Officer for the South Bengal Frontier, expressed satisfaction with the soldiers' successful operation. He emphasized that the BSF is taking stringent measures to combat smuggling along the India-Bangladesh border, as smugglers employ various tactics to transport contraband across the border. Arya urged border residents to report any information related to gold smuggling through the border helpline number. Anyone providing concrete information via WhatsApp message or voice message to 14419 or 9903472227 will receive an appropriate reward, and their identity will remain confidential.
