Bihar YAAS storm kills 7, CM Nitish announces compensation of Rs 4 lakh each

Patna: Cyclone Yaas is now wreaking havoc in Bihar after wreaking havoc in West Bengal and Odisha. In Bihar, a total of seven people have died due to cyclone Yaas so far, while most parts of the state recorded moderate to heavy rain on Friday as low pressure areas were formed in the wake of the cyclonic storm.

In Patna, Darbhanga, Banka, Munger, Begusarai, Gaya and Bhojpur, one person each was killed in the storm. An official statement here said CM Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over the deaths of persons. Kumar has ordered compensation of 4 lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased. CM Nitish also directed that four persons injured in the cyclone in Begusarai and one each in Gaya and Banka should be provided proper treatment. CM Nitish appealed to the people of Bihar to "take all precautions as per the warnings issued by the Meteorological Department" and assured them that efforts are being made to ensure uninterrupted supply of electricity and water and smooth movement of vehicles.

Severe cyclonic storm YAAS affected Jharkhand and Bihar since midnight of May 26 after hitting Odisha and West Bengal on Wednesday. The cyclone caused moderate to heavy rainfall in most parts of the state. According to Met office official S K Mandal here, districts of north Bihar like Katihar and Saran received about or more rainfall of about 200 mm. More than 90 mm of rain has occurred in Patna district since yesterday with strong winds leading to heavy water logging in many parts of the capital including the main areas.
