New Delhi: A 94-year-old widow has demanded the Supreme Court to declare the Emergency imposed in the country in 1975 as unconstitutional. Along with this, the responsibility of looting the unaccounted wealth of her husband, who owns precious gems, has also demanded a compensation of 25 crores while fixing the responsibility on the authorities concerned.

In September this year, the Ministry of Home Affairs has also been appointed as a party in a petition filed by Veera Sarin. Shortly after the Emergency was declared in June 1975, raids were conducted in commercial bases in Sarin and confiscated valuables, jewelery and artifacts on suspected violations of the Customs Act.

The woman's husband was also arrested under the Protection of Foreign Exchange Protection and Prevention of Trafficking Act (COFEPOSE). He was constantly heard by the authorities saying that he should leave his movable and immovable property and leave the country. Later, the petitioner and his children went abroad, as most of their goods and property were confiscated. The petition has demanded a compensation of Rs 25 crore from the authorities concerned. The petition states, "This unconstitutional injustice has affected nearly three generations of his family." This emergency has created a situation that relatives and friends also left together. "According to the petition, the issues of emergency still resonate in the mind of the woman. She wants to find peace by declaring it as illegal.
