Former Congress President Sonia Gandhi, on Saturday, spoke at the Congress Plenary Session in New Delhi.

Gandhi started her speech praising Rahul Gandhi for taking up the responsibility of Congress President at such a challenging time.

“First of all, I congratulate Rahul Gandhi, he took up this responsibility (of party president) at a very challenging time,” said Gandhi.

Sonia Gandhi claimed that Congress is not a political term. It is a movement to bring change in the country. She further said that Congress victory will be a victory for every person associated with the party.

Emphasising on the need to strengthen the ‘great’  party which has roots in India’s political history.

“Today only one thing matters, how to strengthen the great party with which we have relations which goes back in time,” said Gandhi.

Citing Indira Gandhi’s victory in Chikmagalur in 1978 Lok Sabha polls, she appealed the party workers to perform similarly in future. She said that Indira Gandhi’s victory turned around Indian politics then.

Gandhi hailed Congress tenure when Manmohan Singh was in power claiming that Indian economic growth was at its peak then. She expressed her unhappiness with the current government saying that Modi government is ignoring the scheme as policies implemented during UPA tenure.

Further, calling the ruling NDA government ‘arrogant’ said that this government has tried to destroy Congress in the last four years but the latter has never cowered down.

Calling the contemporary times the beginning of a ‘new chapter’, Gandhi concluded with asking fellow party workers to pledge to make India a country free of vendetta and corruption.
