NEW DELHI: In order to overthrow the Narendra Modi-led BJP from winning the second consecutive term at the Centre, the grand old Rahul Gandhi led Congress party might contest the upcoming 2019 Lok Sabha elections on a lesser number of seats.

According to sources of Zee News, the Congress party is likely to challenge the crucial general elections on 250 seats which is the lowest since India got Independence.

This is being done to lodge more non-BJP parties as part of its constant efforts to darn a 'grand alliance' or 'mahagathbandhan' of like-minded parties to throw out the saffron party from power.

Congress is believed to have prepared a blueprint on seat-sharing with other political parties for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. The AK Antony-led committee has sought feedback from the district and state committees of Congress on people's outlook and challenges which are facing by the party. The committee has been tasked to prepare the roadmap for the 2019 elections.

The committee will firm up the 2019 plan only after holding wider discussions with party's district, state and national office bearers and, finally, party chief Rahul Gandhi.

A part of the party has a view that Congress should fight 2019 general elections on a lesser number of seats - 250 and give more presentation to the regional parties which are willing to join 'mahagathbandhan' to defeat the frightening BJP.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi in recent times had said that the 'Mahagathbandhan' of the like-minded parties is the need of the hour to overpower the ruling BJP.
