MUMBAI: Allahabad high court's acquittal of Nupur and Rajesh Talwar on Thursday in the case of double-murder daughter Aarushi and household helper Hemraj throw up the debate once more on whether the right persons had gone behind the bars, a controversy that 'Talvar', the 2015 edge-of-the-seat crime double -murder mystery, had hunted to deconstruct with its 'Rashomon'-style narrative the events that could have happened that crucial night of May 16, 2008.

Although the makers of the film had maintained a certain "clinical" impartiality on the case during its making, Thursday's verdict ending a nine-year trial for the Talwar couple and their life sentence appeared to have brought “great relief" for both Meghna Gulzar who directed Talvar and filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj who wrote its script.

"It's a relief because that's what we tried to carry out during the creation of the film — put out all the viewpoints by all the parties in an unbiased manner," said Bhardwaj, who had found himself drawn to the case following a chance encounter with CBI joint director Arun Kumar under whom the first inquiry happened and who had changed his view about the parents' guiltiness.

"The black humor that one could make out in the film points at the incorruptibility of the parents" added Bhardwaj. "There wasn't enough evidence to put the Talwars in the jail and jailing them was truly unjust. The acquittal is a beautiful thing to have happened because of which our trust in the judicial system became stronger."
