Record snowfall smacked Moscow for the second day in a line on Sunday, causing chaos on transportation and consequential in one death.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin told on Twitter Sunday that one person was killed and two injured after the storm caused a tree to fall, damaging power lines on Saturday.

According to local meteorological authorities, accumulated snowfall reached 62 centimeters deep over the weekend -- nearly equal to the total amount of snowfall for the whole month of February in earlier years.

Days of snow attacked a sharp increase in traffic accidents and rigorously impacted urban transportation. According to official data, 19 accidents occurred in Saturday in Moscow, injuring more than 20 people.

As of Sunday, local authorities had dispatched 15,000 snow removing vehicles and nearly 70,000 sanitation workers to clear the city's 800,000 cubic meters of snow within 24 hours to avoid any more accidents.

Traffic conditions went downhill on Sunday, with some roads choked because of snow clearing work while power outages caused some traffic lights to go out. The traffic index reached six on Sunday morning, much higher than most weekends when the index does not go above one.

More than 100 flights have been delayed and nearly 30 flights were canceled in major airports in Moscow due to the inclement weather.

Russian meteorological authorities forecast the snowstorm will keep on to affect Moscow over the next two days, with wind speeds reaching 20 meters per second and temperatures dipping below 10 degrees Celsius.
