The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has launched new guidelines aimed at developing e-content for children with disabilities, which will apply to school education. The government shared this update with the Supreme Court, emphasizing the importance of ensuring equal participation for disabled students in online classes.

These guidelines are part of a broader initiative to improve digital education accessibility for children with disabilities. The NCERT has also been conducting in-person training programs for teachers and other stakeholders in various states during the 2022-2023 academic year.

This move follows a petition by the Javed Abidi Foundation, which urged the Supreme Court to issue specific guidelines that would allow disabled students to take part in online learning on an equal footing with their peers. The affidavit filed by the government in response to the petition highlighted the importance of these efforts.

The Supreme Court has been actively hearing related cases and has previously ruled that the government must implement accessibility standards in education. In response, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities created an inter-ministerial committee to develop guidelines for inclusive education, which involves key educational bodies like the University Grants Commission (UGC), All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE).

These efforts aim to foster an inclusive digital education environment across the country, ensuring that no child is left behind due to disability.
