New Delhi: Supreme Court today issued a notice to WhatsApp, IT and Finance ministry and sought a detailed reply from them within four weeks as to why a grievance officer in India has not been appointed yet by the instant messaging app Whatsapp.

Worth mention here the Centre had last week asked the Facebook owned WhatsApp to set up a local body with a grievance officer and find a technical solution to mark out the origin of fake messages.

On a related note WhatsApp CEO Chris Daniels recently met top government official including union IT minister Ravi Shankar Prasad during his India tour to discuss the ways to clamp down on fake news on its messaging platform that had led to series of dreadful crimes in the nation like mob-lynching.

Earlier the government has sent out two notices to WhatsApp directing it to take imperative measures to rein in false information and rumors being spread on the messaging platform.

Prior this IT ministry has said that the social platform cannot run away its responsibility for such uncontrolled abuse and needed to find originators of provocative messages. It had also warned that in the absence of adequate checks, it will treat the messaging platform as co-conspirator of rumour propagation and legal consequences will tag along.
