New Delhi [India], Jan 3 (NT): The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 in the hunt for criminalization for instant divorce, triple talaq, is expected to be showdown in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.

Last week, amid hue and cry of all political partiesThe Draft of Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with most of the leading parties in the Opposition, together with the Congress, voting in favor, but with admonition. It was passed after the House rejected a series of modification moved by various Opposition members.

Since the ruling association Modi-led –Govt is lacking a majority in the Rajya Sabha, there are possibilities of the Bill getting caught up, as the leading opposition party Congress, has objections to the imprisonment and maintenance clauses of the Bill, and has pushed for the Bill to be sent to the standing committee or a select commission to take out objectionable clauses.

All the modification approached by Owaisi, Biju Janata Dal's (BJD) Bhartruhari Mahtab, the Congress' Sushmita Dev and the Communist Party of India's (Marxist) A. Sampath were null and void in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

The Draft of Bill, if it passes today, will make triple talaq a criminal offense. Which proposes a three-year imprison for a Muslim man who dissociate his wife in any form of spoken, written or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp (NT)
